How to use it

Worked example · Same day
Input
8:15 AM → 5:45 PM
Calculation
5:45 PM − 8:15 AM
Result
9h 30m
Worked example · Overnight
Input
10:30 PM → 6:15 AM, Ends next day
Calculation
(24h − 10:30 PM) + 6:15 AM
Result
7h 45m
  1. Enter the start time.
  2. Enter the end time.
  3. Turn on “Ends next day” if the end time is after midnight.
  4. Select Calculate.

How it works

Clock times are converted to minutes after midnight. Without “Ends next day”, the duration is the end minus the start, and an end earlier than the start is an error, never a guess.

With “Ends next day”, the time until midnight is added to the time after midnight. Equal times give 0h 00m, or 24h 00m with “Ends next day”.

Formula
duration = end − start
with Ends next day: duration = (24h − start) + end
Limitation. This calculator uses nominal clock time and does not adjust for daylight saving changes.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need “Ends next day”?

HourCalio never guesses that a time range crosses midnight. Turning it on confirms that the end time is on the following day.

What if the start and end times are the same?

The duration is 0h 00m. With “Ends next day” on, it is a full 24h 00m.

How do I enter midnight?

Midnight is 12:00 AM. A range from 10:00 PM to 12:00 AM needs “Ends next day”, because midnight starts the next day. The result is 2h 00m.

Does it adjust for daylight saving time?

No. It uses nominal clock time, so the night when clocks change is not adjusted.
